Police in Japan captured a 23-year-old man who allegedly held a schoolgirl captive in his apartment for nearly two years, authorities said.
The girl, who was 13 when she was kidnapped on her way home from school, generated national news in 2014 when she disappeared in the town of Saitama, near Tokyo.
She slipped out Sunday when Kabu Terauchi went shopping and forgot to lock the door, police said.
Wearing a sweat suit and sandals, she called her parents from a pay phone at a train station. Her mother called police, who descended on Terauchi's flat in downtown Tokyo. He was not there.
Terauchi was found Monday in a forest more than 60 miles from the city, bleeding from the neck where he had cut himself in a botched suicide attempt, police said.
According to CBS news report, his wound was not serious.
He is currently hospitalized for medical treatment and will be charged with kidnapping when he recovers, police said.
While holding the girl hostage, he attended college classes, police said. The girl told investigators he locked her inside the apartment and sometimes took her outside, but kept her under close watch, police said.
He abducted the child by telling her he was a lawyer working on her parent's divorce.
