MY father was kidnapped in Nigeria on a Saturday morning in early May. My brother called to tell me, and suddenly there was not enough breathable air in the world. My father is 83 years old. A small, calm, contented man, with a quietly mischievous humor and a luminous faith in God, his beautiful dark skin unlined, his hair in sparse silvery tufts, his life shaped by that stoic, dignified responsibility of being an Igbo first son.

Chuka Umana's father lost his life in one of so many Nigeria's road accidents

The loss of his father in a mysterious car crash which friends fear was a 'political assassination' may help to explain Chuka Umunna's startling decision to quit the Labour leadership race.
He bowed out of the contest last week claiming he was not ready to put himself and his family through the intense scrutiny that comes with the position.
And it is thought his fierce protection of the women in his life could have stemmed from the fact that he was forced to become the 'man of the family' aged just 13.
His father, Bennett, died in a car crash soon after standing to be a governor of a Nigerian state on an anti-bribery platform in 1992.

Britain now has the gayest Parliament in the world after last week’s election.

MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood Catherine Smith
There are 32 openly gay, lesbian and bisexual MPs – just under 5 per cent of the total number in the Commons.
This dwarfs the 12 and ten in the parliaments of Sweden and the Netherlands respectively, both countries that pride themselves on their liberal attitude to gay rights.
According to analysis by the New Statesman magazine, 13 are Labour MPs, 12 are Conservatives and six represent the SNP.
In the last Parliament there were 26 gay, lesbian and bisexual Labour, Lib Dem and Conservative MPs.
This year the Conservatives put up more openly gay candidates than any other party – 39 men and three women.
Out of their 13 gay, lesbian and bisexual MPs from the previous Parliament, 12 stood for re-election and only one – Eric Ollerenshaw – was defeated.
His loss was made up for by the election of Ben Howlett in Bath.
Out of the ten seats Labour took from the Tories, three were won by gay candidates – Wes Streeting, Peter Kyle and Catherine Smith.

Labour MP Chuka Umunna (left) and girlfriend Alice Sullivan (right) pictured before the Andrew Marr Show in Westminster this morningLabour's leadership race turned serious this morning - after front-runner Chuka Umunna wheeled out his new girlfriend in public for the first time as he set out his stall to replace Ed Miliband.
The shadow business secretary was pictured walking hand-in-hand with his glamorous lawyer partner Alice Sullivan ahead of his interview on the BBC's flagship Andrew Marr show.
Mr Umunna used the interview to criticise Labour's drift to the left and admitted he was considering a bid become leader.
His intervention came after Labour's leadership battle descended into open warfare after Mr Umunna and the other leadership contenders were accused of 'behaving like family members taking jewellery off a corpse' by openly criticising Mr Miliband so soon after the election defeat.

UK Elections: Miliband concedes defeat, Cameron secures victory, Labour and Lib Dem leaders face extinction

Ed Miliband today threw in the towel after a series of crushing election losses, as he said he was 'deeply sorry' for Labour's 'difficult and disappointing' election night.
David Cameron has secured an extraordinary victory as 'shy Tories' came out at the last moment to keep him in Downing Street, with a 6am results forecast suggesting he will win 325 seats - exactly half of the Commons. With Sinn Fein not taking their seats and the Speaker not voting, it effectively gives the Tories a majority.
Mr Cameron said it was 'too early to say' what the final result of the General Election would be, but added that there was 'the chance now to build on the foundation' laid in the last parliament.
But the Tory leader will have to deal with SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon who is cleaning up north of the border, leaving Scotland as a near one-party state.
In a signal that he now accepts he will not be PM, Mr Miliband said the next government 'has a huge responsibility' to hold the UK together.
