Nigeria prepares against Zika epidemic

Following the global alert of the outbreak of the Zika virus in Brazil, most tropical and south American countries have started preparations to ensure that the mosquito borne virus does not cross their borders.  As part of her own preventive measures against possible outbreak of Zika virus, the Nigerian Federal Government says it has put measures in place to ensure that the virus is not transmitted by mosquitoes in the country.

Stella Oduah, Andy Ubah removed by Supreme Court

The ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria has removed Stella Oduah and Andy Ubah as elected Senators of the Nigerian Senate on Friday, January 29.  The senators representing Anambra central  and Anambra south respectively had their election invalidated based on an appeal by a faction of the PDP in Anambra State led by Mr. Ejike Oguebego.

Nigeria will soon receive $750m Abacha loot, £6.9 million Ibori loot according to Justice Minister


The Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation, Justice Abubakar Malami, says the Federal government will soon receive another $750 million allegedly laundered by former Military dictator, Sani Abacha and £6.9 million by former Delta state governor, James Ibori who is serving jail term in the UK over corruption charges.

Zika virus from Mosquito bites, pregnant women advised not to travel to 22 countries

Three Britons have been infected with Zika virus, a mosquito-borne illness that has been linked to brain deformities in babies. 
Pregnant women have been warned not to travel to the 22 countries where the infection has been reported.

Militants force the closure of NNPC Refineries

US visa waiver scheme restricted for British dual nationals

A BBC journalist with dual British-Iranian nationality has been prevented from flying to the US after falling foul of changes to visa rules.
Rana Rahimpour was told by US authorities she could not travel under a visa waiver scheme.

Under new laws, dual citizens from several nationalities must instead apply for a visa at the US embassy.

Yi Quan Lake berths Winter festival

Perhaps a winter activity of tourist value may just be in the making the making. In sharp contrast to the economic 'winter' which the Chinese economy is going through, Handan in the north-east of China is throwing up an activity of immense cultural value. 

The fall of temperature usually signifies that winter is at hand except in precise areas like the north pole where winter wakes and sleeps. Winter induces people to sty at home to remain warm and it such a  season that challenges an adventure to out-door life.

Somehow, the Yi Quan lake in Handan is breaking convention. The lake has frozen to sub zero levels and this has become the attraction that has encouraged hoards of people, wearing skimpy swimsuits, to frolic in the lake that's partially caked with enormous slabs of ice.

Arise goes off Air due to legal action for unpaid wages


Just before 5pm on 14 January, something strange happened to television channel Arise, a small African television network operating out of London – it suddenly vanished from the airwaves.
The message beneath logo of the station, which is broadcast on Sky channel 519 and which operates from prime studios overlooking Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, simply read: “Normal service will resume as soon as possible.”

Al-Qaeda strikes in Ouagadougou

Gunmen stormed the Splendid hotel in Ouagadougou,Burkina Faso last night in what appeared to be a major terrorist attack. Security forces were called in to attempt taking control of the luxury hotel in the centre of Burkina Faso's capital city. The gunmen were considered Islamist radicals and took hostages, killing at least 20 people, according to official reports. The four-star hotel is reported to be frequently used by the United Nations and people from the Western world.

Switzerland to transfer another $300 million Abacha loot to Nigeria – Minister
